Introduction to METEOR Supervision and Mentoring Training Resource

Welcome to the Supervision and Mentoring Training Resource of the METEOR Horizon Europe project – a dynamic and transformative learning resource designed to strengthen mentoring practices in interdisciplinary, international, and ethically complex research environments! This resource is central to METEOR’s mission to cultivate collaborative learning, foster inclusive academic cultures, and develop transversal skills that empower researchers to address real-world challenges with creativity, integrity, and resilience.

Supervision and Mentoring Training Resource is based on the idea that supervision and mentoring can be seen as special instances of collaboration and teamwork. This training resource will help participants understand the value of mentoring, including peer mentoring, and coaching in career development. Another objective of this TR is to maintain collaboration between existing supervisors/mentors and METEOR participants, avoiding conflicting priorities, whilst increasing the quality of supervision and the openness of doctoral education to transversal skills improvement.

Mentoring in METEOR is not a one-directional process; it is a reciprocal and evolving relationship that supports both mentors and mentees in their academic, professional, and personal growth. The resource is structured around two interconnected lessons:

  • Lesson 1: Mentoring in METEOR
Focuses on preparing mentors for their pivotal role in guiding interdisciplinary research, supporting the ability to develop new knowledge, theories, methods, and interpretations, knowledge synthesis, and navigating ethical and practical challenges in global research contexts.
  • Lesson 2: Peer Mentoring
Explores the power of peer mentoring as a collaborative practice that builds community, promotes wellbeing, and facilitates mutual learning across disciplines, career stages, and academic traditions.

Together, these lessons aim to foster critical reflection and ethical awareness in research processes, and a shared understanding of mentorship of high degree of complexity as a cornerstone of inclusive and innovative research cultures within METEOR and beyond.
