Module Overview

Research projects that are most successful in driving meaningful change are typically interdisciplinary and intercultural.
They bring together researchers from different fields, institutions, and cultural contexts – and require skilled, inclusive management to deliver real impact.

TR3h equips you to plan, run, and complete such complex, multi-partner projects.
You will learn how to:

  1. Turn a multi-disciplinary, international grant into a practical project plan.
  2. Lead and coordinate diverse, intercultural research teams – building trust, inclusion, and effective collaboration (drawing on TR3b – Intercultural Competence & Inclusion and TR3c – Collaboration & Teamwork).
  3. Design and use Gantt charts to plan, visualise, and track progress
  4. Apply accessible project-management and collaboration tools.
  5. Control budgets and resources across different partners and countries.
  6. Navigate ethics, data protection, and intellectual property (IP)IP means ownership and rights over outputs such as data, publications, and innovations – and meet reporting obligations in transnational projects.
  7. Monitor progress and keep interdisciplinary teams aligned with impact goals, in coordination with TR3g – Impact & Behavioural Change Planning.
  8. Conclude projects effectively and strengthen long-term global partnerships.

This module bridges proposal design (TR3f/e) with real-world delivery.
It focuses on the practical realities of managing diverse, international, cross-disciplinary research teams – the heart of the METEOR approach.

Who should take it: Doctoral students and early-career researchers aiming to lead or coordinate interdisciplinary and intercultural research projects successfully.

 

Learning Outcomes

After completing TR3h, you will be able to:

  1. Translate an approved, interdisciplinary research proposal into a clear project roadmap – aligning tasks, milestones, and deliverables across disciplines and institutions.
  2. Lead, coordinate, and motivate intercultural, international research teams – applying inclusion, cultural awareness, and communication strategies to build trust, in alignment with TR3b and TR3c.
  3. Design and apply Gantt charts and use practical management tools to plan and monitor work in multi-country, multi-discipline environments.
  4. Plan and control budgets in complex, distributed projects – track costs, forecast spending, and ensure compliance with Horizon Europe and other funders.
  5. Navigate governance and compliance – including ethics approvals, GDPR-compliant data sharing, IP agreements, and risk mitigation in cross-cultural and legal contexts.
  6. Monitor, evaluate, and adapt – keeping interdisciplinary and multicultural teams on schedule, aligned with impact goals (TR3g), and resilient to change.
  7. Close and hand over projects responsibly – ensuring long-term collaboration and preparing outputs for exploitation (TR3i) and communication/dissemination (TR3j).

It combines short, focused units with interactive activities so you can build your project-management skills step by step.

  • Interactive tools: Download and experiment with editable templates – such as Gantt charts, risk logs, and budget simulators – to apply each concept to your own project.
  • Scenario-based learning: Every topic includes a short, practical case or challenge that mirrors real research-management situations.
    • Examples: identify key deliverables from a Grant Agreement; respond to intercultural communication issues; create a simple Gantt chart; manage a delayed work package.
  • Inclusive focus: Activities and examples highlight the importance of cultural awareness and disciplinary diversity, reflecting METEOR’s emphasis on intercultural and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Reflection and practice: Each section encourages you to pause, reflect, and apply what you’ve learned directly to your own doctoral or postdoctoral context, or to a preliminary project idea to develop within METEOR.

 

Assessment

  • Knowledge checks: brief quizzes and mini-scenario responses after each unit to reinforce learning and application.
  • Capstone assignment: create a Project Implementation Plan – including milestones, a budget outline, a risk & compliance map, and a team-coordination strategy for an interdisciplinary, intercultural project.
