METEOR approaches put into practice with PhD candidates at the University of Gdańsk
METEOR methods and resources travelled beyond the project consortium in October 2026, when Marina Prilutskaya from Nord University delivered two interactive workshops for PhD candidates during a stay at the University of Gdańsk.
Held on 1 and 2 October, the workshops translated key elements of the METEOR approach into practical learning activities focused on transdisciplinary collaboration, societal engagement and research and innovation project design.
Working across disciplines, cultures and sectors
The first workshop, “Teamwork and Collaboration in Transdisciplinary International Research Groups for Transformative Eco-outwards Research: Insights from the METEOR Project”, explored how researchers can work effectively across disciplinary, cultural, institutional and sectoral boundaries.
Through discussion, peer learning and collaboration dilemmas, participants reflected on the relationship between their PhD projects and wider societal challenges. They also worked with practical issues such as communication, trust-building, intercultural collaboration, negotiation and collaborative problem-solving.
From societal challenges to project ideas
The second workshop, “From Societal Challenge to Project Idea: Designing a Transdisciplinary Research & Innovation Proposal”, focused on turning complex societal challenges into coherent and collaborative research project ideas.
Working in interdisciplinary groups, participants developed simplified transdisciplinary project concepts inspired by METEOR’s Transformative Research and Innovation Proposal (TRIP) model. The exercise guided them through defining a research problem, formulating objectives and expected outcomes, identifying relevant stakeholders and considering societal impact before presenting their project concepts.
Extending METEOR beyond the consortium
The workshops demonstrate how METEOR approaches and resources can be reused in doctoral training outside the partner institutions. By adapting project concepts to a local PhD training setting, the activities extended METEOR’s reach while giving doctoral candidates hands-on experience with collaborative, transdisciplinary and societally engaged research.
